DEXA (Bone Densitometry)

By measuring the density of your bones, DEXA is used primarily to detect or confirm osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become thinner and more fragile. DEXA is an excellent tool to determine those at high risk for developing fractures. As such, it is often the first step in developing a plan, with your doctor, to help you avoid fractures.

Before your DEXA
If you take calcium supplements, don’t take them within 24 hours of your test. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to the appointment, avoiding metal zippers, belts or buttons.

If you recently had a barium exam or have been injected with a contrast material for a CT Scan or radioisotope scan, tell your doctor: you may have to wait 10 to 14 days before undergoing a DEXA test.
